Gate City Brewery
Good day fellow hopheads! It is my pleasure to welcome you all the latest installment of Beers with Brandon where we have been exploring the realm of craft beers in the local Atlanta region. This week I thought it would be interesting to look closer at Gate City Brewing Co. located at 43 Magnolia Street Roswell, GA. This company was founded in 2015 by longtime friends Brian Borngesser and Pat Rains who had originally met roughly ten years ago and bonded over their shared love of home brewing and being active members in the Roswell community. Located at the center of Historic Roswell this two-story 3,000 square foot taproom which was formally two mechanics shops has grown into a vibrant business that offers up to twenty in-house crafted brews at any time. The name Gate City was taken from an old nickname for Atlanta, GA paying humble tribute to the early days of the city as a bustling hub for railroads heading all over the country for which the co-founders embody the traditions and power of resilience in every single brew they pour. With community engagement being a center stone of their founding it's no surprise they try to be as active as they can with those they serve. On weekends they host live music shows featuring local musicians, monthly beer and yoga events, axe throwing and corn hole leagues, and even weddings! In addition to all these events Gate City Brewing Co. is also featured in the annual Alive in Roswell, a family-friendly monthly festival held on the third Thursday of every month from 5-9 PM between April and October. The festival features live bands, local food trucks, kids' entertainment, and is hosted by many small businesses in the surrounding Roswell area all in order to bring people together as a community. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic the festival has been pushed back until July 15, 2021 with more details to come.
Like with any brewery Gate City all started with one beer and in this case that was the Copperhead American Amber Ale at a mild 5.2% ABV. Listed as one of their core beers this particular brew was first developed in Pat Rain's garage and offers the drinker a dry, mildly bitter taste with a splash of caramel malts that goes down smooth every sip. If you hadn't figured out by now, I am an avid IPA connoisseur and am a big fan of the OTP Double IPA with its strong 8% ABV. This hazy craft brew is known for its sweet yet bitter taste stemming from the honey and grapefruit used in the brewing process with a faint aroma of pine from the Simcoe hops which is widely used in American IPA's. For those of you who may be interested in a sour look no further than the Raspberry Tarty McFly named after the classic 80's Sci-fi Back to the Future. This seasonal kettle sour ale is tart with a fruity raspberry profile that refreshes the pallet and is perfect for those hot summer days when you could really use a beer to cool off.
